Carol Hutter has been a professional musician and teacher for over 40 years. She has played with a wide variety of prominent orchestras, conductors and musicians, and has taught at all levels from private lessons to graduate classes. She teaches Violin and viola, has studied in traditional European methods, and is trained in the Suzuki method.
At 19 years old she played principal viola at the Berkshire Music Festival at Tanglewood where she earned a fellowship and soloed under Leonard Bernstein. Carol studied at SUNY Binghamton and the New England Conservatory before earning her Master of Music from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Her violin teachers have included Eric Lewis, Leopold Rybb, Fredy Ostrovsky, and Maryanne Wallenberg. She has studied viola under Toby Appel, Janet Lyman Hill, Sol Greitzer, Scott Nickrenz, Burton Fine, Philipp Naegele, Paul Polivnick, and Linda Moss. |
After relocating to New England and becoming a faculty member of the UMass Amherst Performing Arts Division, she went on to co-found the Community Music School of Springfield and the Northampton Community Music Center. Carol’s teacher training has included work with Kato Havas and the New Approach to String Playing, David Darling’s Music For People, and Roberta Guaspari Tsvaros’ workshops on teaching music to children in inner city schools.
Carol is a longstanding member of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra, and a founding member of the Bel Canto Chamber Players. She has served as a member of the Hartford, Vermont, and Binghamton Symphonies and was principal viola with the Arcadia Players Baroque Chamber Orchestra for 16 years. She was member of the New England Chamber Orchestra, the Berkshire Bach Festival Orchestra, the Tri-Cities Opera Orchestra, and the Broome County Pops Orchestra. She lives in Hadley, Massachusetts with her cat, Suzie. |
